Stem cell therapy: A lesson from human catholics for actual catholics

May 24, 2009 By: admin Category: Cord Blood News Comments

mother-and-childCritics of the Notre Dame selection of the president to receive an honorary degree and deliver the commencement address say Obama’s support of legal abortion and embryonic stem-cell research made him an inappropriate choice for a Catholic university- But who cares? Do any body really cares?

Conscience is a motivation deriving logically from ethical or moral principles that govern a person’s thoughts and actions.

We are not scientists we could only pray and hope and encourage lawmakers and scientists to overcome the complications and barriers of stem cell treatment as early as possible and save us.

But it appears that the greatest obstacles that stem cell research is presently fighting with is not rejections of cells or tumors it is a bunch of so called intellectuals who are trying to save some cells which will some day transform into a human being, but surprisingly some how they are determined not to help those who are already transformed into human and suffering with such diseases which will surely kill them one day.

Please be positive, don’t try to duck under the curtain of spirituality, if you think that your conscience is really motivating you logically and God is really on your side then-

Why not try and pressurize the lawmakers to legalize mercy killing?

Why not be bold enough and make a list of pure Catholics and sign a bond, that you and your nearest one will never take the opportunity of stem cell therapy ever, ( if they found a cure then you will be in the first line- every body knows it very well)

And what about laboratory animals? what scientists are doing with them? injecting diseases to find a cure for us, is it not cruelty? and you are enjoying the result of those cruelty. Being a real Catholic you should also avoid those medicines and relay on holy water and herbs.

They are experimenting with monkeys, if primary cells are human beings then human is also just a stage ahead of monkeys, then why you are letting them experimented and consuming the results to live longer?

Dear holy friends no hard feelings, if you do not understand the feelings and sufferings of living beings then we do not care you, please don’t bother us and don’t disturb the scientists who are trying to save us.

Obama did a great job, for us he is holier than any pure Catholic, already he have done enough by withdrawing the ban on embryonic stem cell research, for only this bold, logical, holy and conscience approach he will be remembered for ever, its a history.

“To be embryos” does not cry but our little children cry loudly when they are in pain, when you are trying to impose something on human beings you have to think like a mother. Be a Catholic mother, be a European mother, an Asian mother or an African mother- mothers are eternal they are that global conscience that could feel the pain and pleasure of the child, its the only link that knows no boundary in language, cast or regions, throughout the world every one knows the meaning of the word MA, MOM, MAMA or MOTHER.

I have asked several sufferers about the act of Obama regarding the lifting of ban on embryonic stem sell research, all of them believes that Obama act like a mother- see he has already achieved the most prestigious honor of the globe, so we give a damn to your Notre Dame honorary degree.

Gallups 2006-2008 Values and Beliefs surveys indicate that what Obama believes regarding stem cell research, Catholics also believes in the same way.

Here are the percentages of what Catholics find morally acceptable:

The Gallup poll revealed 40 percent of Catholics found abortion morally acceptable compared to 41 percent of non-Catholics.

Having a child out of wedlock, 61 percent; divorce, 71 percent; premarital sex, 67 percent; embryonic stem-cell research, 63 percent; the death penalty, 61 percent.

Gallup distinguished regular churchgoing Catholics and non-Catholics from nonregular churchgoing Catholics and non-Catholics. Of weekly church attendees, 24 percent of Catholics found abortion morally acceptable, 53 found embryonic stem-cell research acceptable, 53 percent found premarital sex acceptable and 48 percent felt having a baby out of wedlock was acceptable, too.

Finally we like to redirect the offer of Father Hugh Cleary, which he actually directed for Obama to “rethink”, yes father please rethink, rethink like a mother, talk with your children who are suffering and dying talk with people like Cody Unser, who is paralyzed from the chest down since the age of twelve due to Transverse Myelitis, talk with the parents of blind children who are hoping to see the world for the first time, try to talk with children who are living like a collection of flesh and bone due to brain disorders.

This is no personal thing, this is the voice of the mass, they want it early, they are desperate, they want normal life, please rethink and help the stem cell research proceed- May God Bless You.

Stem cells from bone marrow engineered to kill Metastatic lung cancer

May 24, 2009 By: admin Category: Cord Blood News Comments

This special appearance of adult stem cells from bone marrow as a supplier of a cancer killing protein has been demonstrated by the researchers from the Centre for Respiratory Research at the University College of London.

Researchers genetically engineered mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs )in such a way that can deliver TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), destroying the tumor cells while sparing normal cells.

Studies had shown that MSCs can be used as vectors to deliver anti-tumor therapy, while other studies found that TRAIL killed cancer cells, but not normal cells.

Researcher Michael Loebinger, M.D., M.A, andh S. M. Janes, M.D., Ph.D., identified those cells likely to be resistant to therapies (cancer cells that have characteristics of stem cells) and found that they were just as likely to be destroyed as tumor cells by this novel therapy.

In mice, The researchers showed that the stem cells could reduce the growth of subcutaneous breast tumors in mice, by approximately 80 percent (p< .0001).

The stem cells could also be injected intravenously as therapy for mice with lung metastases and could eliminate lung metastases in 38 percent of mice compared to control mice, all of which still had metastases (p=0.03).

It is expected that the human trials of TRAIL-expressing MSCs could begin in two or three years.

The research had been funded by the medical Research Council UK,. It will be presented on May 19, at the American Thoracic Society’s 105th International Conference in San Diego.

Existing human embryonic stem (ES) cell lines might be blocked by new guidelines ?

May 23, 2009 By: admin Category: Cord Blood News Comments

Stem cell scientists should respond fast, May 26, is the last chance, after that the window to provide feedback will close, and the drafted rules will possibly help disappear funding for almost all existing cell lines.

Time is really short for the scientists to respond to the call for comments on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) proposed guidelines for the use of human embryonic stem (ES) cell lines and their eligibility for federal funds.

Patrick Taylor, deputy general counsel at Children’s Hospital Boston, believes that all the ongoing research is threatened, due to the retroactive rules. He also explains some of the legal implications of the NIH’s new funding rules, and whether should they be adopted as written.

His reaction had been published in a Forum article on middle of the month of May by Cell Press in the journal Cell Stem Cell.

According to Taylor, it is very important that scientists should be aware of the situation and the problem should be solved as early as possible.

Research with almost all existing cell lines will not be fundable, leaving almost no federal funds for research using cells created ethically since 2001.

This will mean a loss of the research benefit of the last eight years, even though that research was independently reviewed and determined to be ethical under federal standards.

Though continual access to the ES cells for the medical research is highly important, but the current proposed guidelines may not even allow for continued research on the 21 ES cell lines approved by President Bush in 2001, says Ronald McKay, director of the NIH Stem Cell Unit.

Researchers from all scientific disciplines and interested members of the general public can comment on the proposed guidelines at http://nihoerextra.nih.gov/stem_cells/add.htm until 11 p.m. EST on May 26.

$19 million state stem cell funding enlisted John Hopkins and University of Maryland into the …

May 23, 2009 By: admin Category: Cord Blood News Comments

The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission has granted awards for 59 projects, out of 147 applications that it received.

The grants have been highly desired by leading scientists since federal funding on new stem cell research was banned in 2001. Maryland launched the stem cell commission in 2006 and is one of a handful of states that started funding stem cell research after the federal ban.

The largest grants are given to scientists who have preliminary data supporting their research are entitled to receive the largest grants. That awards are range from $55,000 to $300,000 per year.

The stem cell grant will aimed at the the following research subjects:

  • Generation of patient-specific iPS cells for modeling and treating Gaucher disease.
  • A novel stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury-induced chronic neuropathic pain
  • Understanding functions of schizophrenia susceptibility genes using pluripotent human stem cells.
  • Scale-Up Manufacturing, Authentication, and Banking of Human Pluripotent Stem Cells.
  • The role of transglutaminase in adhesion-dependent and growth factor-mediated responses of mesenchymal stem cells.

Stem cell research and Obama should speed up the rescue of paralytics: urges disability activist

May 23, 2009 By: admin Category: Cord Blood News Comments

Cody-UnserOnly a disable person knows the actual pain of the disability, she is Cody Unser a disabled disability activist, the global voice for disable person, student at University of Redlands and head of the Cody Unser First Step Foundation.

Cody now 22 was paralyzed from the chest down since the age of twelve from Transverse Myelitis, Cody spent time talking and writing to whomever would listen, from news stations and morning shows, also knocking on doors of leaders like Senator Pete Domenici and others.

On a very recent town hall meeting she strongly urges President Obama for rapid acceleration of stem cell research so that a cure can be found for paralysis.

Cody who never lost hope in the science and the dedicated scientists, honestly admits that, was started losing hope and faith in her government.

She even tried her best to convinced President Bush to allow stem cell funding almost a decade ago.

She went room to room with her doctors from John’s Hopkins to make people understand stem cell therapy and the science behind it and thus labeled as Rat Girl” by the Washington post.

Cody is happy and hopeful now that politics has been taken out of the picture.

She is determined to work with President Obama’s administration to bring stem cell capabilities to reality. She believes that stem cell therapy got the ability to reverse the the unacceptable disable condition in which many Americans are living.

According to an April 2009 survey from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, more than 5.6 million Americans currently live with paralysis, this survey report is five times more than originally estimated. And the worst part of it is nearly a quarter of these paralyzed Americans have to survive only on a annual household incomes of $10,000 or less.

The Cody Unser First Step Foundation is a global not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising research funds, public awareness and quality of life for those afflicted with all forms of spinal cord-related paralysis.

The foundation wants the followings from government:

  • A cure for paralysis is found soon
  • Lofty medical expenses would diminish
  • Employment opportunities would expand
  • Financial independence would boost

Cody believes in Christopher Reeve’s saying GO FORWARD, and she also believes that their President Obama like a living superman will just made that so, he is just the kind of hope whom millions battling with different diseases and paralyzing conditions were looking for.

Now the hope to walk have strengthen with the faith, the faith on government the faith on the President of United States.

Thank you President on behalf of all disabled bed ridden people, thank you on behalf of people on wheel chairs, thanks on behalf of those parents whose little ones are fighting against killer diseases, thanks from the people who are living in the darkness and have not seen the world ever.

Stem cell transplant in embryo protects mice from cardiac injury in adulthood

May 21, 2009 By: admin Category: Cord Blood News Comments

WASHINGTON – Stem cells, when transplanted into mouse embryos, have been found to halt or reverse cardiac injury after heart attack in adulthood, according to a new study.

The researchers involved in the study delivered embryonic stem cells to mouse embryos in the earliest stages of development, and found that the resulting mice demonstrated a capacity to recover from cardiac injury in adulthood.

The study provides the first evidence that preventive regenerative medicine can successfully be used to treat myocardial infarction through prophylactic intervention.

Led by Dr. Andre Terzic of the Mayo Clinic, researchers injected mouse embryos with embryonic stem cells that had been used to successfully treat ischemic heart disease following heart attack.

The resulting animals incorporated between five and 20 percent of labelled stem cell-derived tissue.

They were born with no apparent abnormalities, and the tested and control groups had similar overall baseline cardiac disease risk profiles and demonstrated similar cardiac performance during the one-year follow-up.

In both the groups, researchers induced cardiac injury by tying off the left anterior artery, causing complete coronary blockage.

It was found that the group that had received the embryonic stem cell treatment recovered cardiac function, while the other group deteriorated, demonstrating ischemic myopathy, myocardial scarring and significant pulmonary congestion, usually seen in the progression towards heart failure.

On the whole, the group treated with stem cells displayed a favourable disease course, with superior exercise workload capacity and stress test performance, as well as increased survival.

“Preemptive stem cell-based intervention in utero thus provides a strategy to engineer tolerance, and prevent incidence of life-threatening organ failure in the adult,” said the authors.

They concluded that beyond reconstructive surgery, stem cell transplantation in prenatal development could offer an innovative approach for preventing disease.

The study has been published in Stem Cells. (ANI)
